Music has many effects on our lives when it comes to health, feelings and moods. It also inspires many aspects of our lives. Whether it is art, movies, TV shows or how we dance, music can play a great role in how we do things. But what about  what we wear? Have you ever wondered how does music affect fashion or if it does at all?

The effect music has on fashion has been evident throughout history. However, now with social media playing such a huge role in how things are seen and shared, that role has increased dramatically.

The truth it that fashion has always been used as a way for individual expression. Others also use it as a form of art. The same can be said about music. For that reason, both of these are intertwined and closely linked together.

Fashion and Music In The Past

Looking back through history, music has always had an effect on fashion and style. None is more evident than the 60’s. During the sixties, fashion and music were very closely related. Both played a huge role in how each one influenced the other. However, music played a greater role in which direction the fashion industry ultimately ended up going. The central theme during the 60s was peace and love. The hippie style consisted of flowers, bell bottom pants and vibrant colors. Artist during that era, dressed this way as well. In a way, the way  they dressed, what they wore, helped shape the fashion industry. The music also became part of the hippie movement.

This went on during the seventies when Disco music was in full swing. Movies such as Saturday Night Fever widely influenced how people danced and dressed. The same can be said of the 90’s when Kurt Cobain and other artist began to promote the vintage grunge look. The same for hard rock and punk rock music. Many young teens dressed according to the theme used by the genre they listened and listen to.

Music & Fashion In Present Time

In the present, Hip Hop and pop music have completely shaped the way most people dress today. Or at least what they choose to wear based on what is popular for that genre. For a while, the huge saggy jeans and big gold chains were seen everywhere. These were made fashionable by artists such as Tupac, Eazy E and Notorious BIG. It was during these times that many in the fashion industry began to see just how great the influence of an artist or music, played in fashion.

Musicians Play A Role In Fashion’s Direction

Puff Daddy used the artists and power he had among the Hip Hop industry to turn his signature Sean John clothing line, into a multi-million dollar label. Other artists soon followed and began to promote their own clothing lines. Or they were used by clothing companies to promote their apparel. In a way, both the artist and the music greatly influence the fashion industry.
