Musicology is the scientific and scholarly study of music as far as an academic subject is concerned. Unlike musicians who compose, train and/or perform in music, musicology focuses on the research of music. That is not to say that some musicologists are not also trained in performance though. What it mostly does, is focus on the cultural and historical contexts of music.

They are, after all, trained in the academic study of music whether it is scientifically or humanistically. The study of history or correspondent to art history organized.

The analysis of people involved in music such as (performers, composers, audiences)

The study of a region or nation pertaining to (South Asian music, American music)

The adherence to the structure of (music analysis, music theory)

The accordance of how music functions as art pertaining to the (philosophy of music, music aesthetics)

If you are planning on entering the musicology field, keep in mind that most need a PhD. That’s because the sector is very heavily research oriented. For anyone who wants to seriously follow this field, they are encouraged to pursue either a PhD or a Master’s degree. This doesn’t mean that you cannot move forward without it. What it does means is that your chances for success will increase even more if you do so. This is especially true if you plan on publishing anything within the music sector. If you love music, then whichever area you choose, will make it that much easier for you to follow.
